Things to Do

With its excellent location, fabulous mountain views, numerous recreational opportunities, and historic downtown district where you'll find locally-owned restaurants, galleries, spas and boutiques, Monument is the type of charming small town you just don't find anymore. Monument is known for its small-town feel, celebrating arts and culture and community events year round: Art Hop in the spring; Summer Soulstice in June; the 4th of July Parade and Street Fair; Free Concerts in the Park in June; the Monument Chili Cook-off in September; Safe Trick or Treat in November, and Holiday events and hayrides in December.

The History of Monument

Monument’s first homesteaders arrived in 1865 to mark out the town’s preliminary shape. Incorporated in 1879, it was first called Henry’s Station, after Henry Limbach, one of the original settlers. Its name was changed to Monument when the Denver & Rio Grande railroad came through after the Civil War in 1870 linking Denver and Colorado Springs. Today, Monument’s historic district still reflects an era of bygone days with its small-town character.

Monument Rock stands amidst the Monument Open Space Preserve, a symbol of the town's enduring nature. As part of the Santa Fe Trailhead, there are many trails around the rock offering paths for horseback riding, dog walking and jogging. Community events throughout the year add to Monument's charm. Events and programs such as Music in the Park and Art Hop are organized by the Historic Monument Merchant's Association.

Monument Plaza offers a unique blend of quality shopping all within walking distance of one another. Located off Highway 105, shoppers will find galleries, home décor, book and specialty stores, as well as restaurants and professional service businesses. For major purchases, Jackson Creek, the commercial expansion of Monument offers a range of national chain store shopping mixed with smaller retail and service businesses along with office condominiums and restaurants.
